Skin Imperfections - Skin Tags, Milia etc

Most of us, at some point in our lives, will grow or develop skin imperfections. At The Summit, we specialize in the removal of many of these skin irregularities. Removing them is easier, safer and more cost effective than you think!
Here area some of the things that you may have that we can and cannot remove:

Skin Tags are soft flesh coloured or deeply pigmented skin growths which are raised above the surrounding skin. They may have a thin stalk so that the skin tag hangs from the skin. They can range in size from 1mm to 1cm and can vary quite a bit in appearance. They are harmless and do not become cancerous or malignant.

They are most commonly found on the eyelids, neck, beneath the breasts and under the arms.

It is thought that they may be caused by or increased under these conditions:

  • Friction
  • Hereditary factors
  • Areas of thickened skin due to sun damage
  • Obesity
  • Diabetes
  • Pregnancy

We specialize in the removal of these annoying little skin growths. The treatment is called Thermo Coagulation. Successfully performed for over 30 years, it uses heat in a very fine and precise way. Using this technique, we cauterize the base of the skin tag, to cut off the blood supply to the growth and remove it. It is quick and has only some discomfort.

To book, simply ask for a Thermo Coagulation Consultation (15 minutes - complimentary). If you wish to also book a session, on the same day as your consultation, please ask at time of booking. One session is $59 and 15 minutes in length. The number of skin tags removed in one session varies from client to client and cannot be guaranteed. Typically one to 5 skin tags can be removed in one session.

Skin tags can often be confused with seborrheic keratosis pictured below.

We cannot remove seborrheic keratosis at The Summit. These benign growths are typically tan or brown in colour, often with a waxy stuck on look. They are often on the face, scalp, neck, back and chest - sun exposed areas. Although it is believed they are most likely caused by sun exposure you have to be genetically predisposed to have them triggered by the sun. Only a dermatologist can remove these lesions.

Milia are small spherical, pearl like bumps which are visible through the surface of the skin. They are common in people of all ages.

The cause is thought to be caused by one or more of the following:

    • an accumulation of dead skin cells below the epidermis.
    • a thickening of the skin as a result of sun damage, poor exfoliation or dehydration
    • the use of heavy oil-based cosmetics

We use one of two treatments for the removal of milia - either Thermo Coagulation or a needling procedure.

Milia can be removed in any of the following treatments, at no extra charge, using a needling technique:

    • Deep Cleansing Detox Facial Treatments
    • Signature Facial
    • Classic Facial
    • Rejuvenating Facial
    • Signature Skin Transformation

If you wish to have your milia removed without a facial, book a Thermo Coagulation Consultation (complimentary - 15 minutes) and one session of Thermo Coagulation (15 minutes - $59 plus tax). During the consultation, we will assess the growths to ensure they are milia and not a cholesterol deposits (xanthelasma). See below picture of xanthelasma.

Thermo Coagulation is a treatment, using heat, to dissolve the oil and debris compacted in the skin. Sometimes in a thermo coagulation session, we also incorporate a needling technique depending on the size and location of the milia. The sensation is one of a tiny needle pricking the skin. It may be uncomfortable but not painful enough to need topical anaesthetic.

    Cherry Angiomas

These little vascular lesions are benign and can appear anywhere on the body. They usually remove easily with Thermo Coagulation. This uses heat to dry up the blood in this little round lesion. It is quick and relatively painless.

What to expect after the above treatments at The Summit

Immediately after Thermo Coagulation, the skin, where the tag or milia was removed, will have a light coloured trace. This lasts for a few hours. In the following days, the surrounding area may appear a little redder and a micro crust will appear on the tiny wound created. This will fall off and heal within a few days. Any redness in the surrounding tissue should go after a few weeks. If a cherry angioma was removed,  it may look darker due to the dried blood, which will resolve over the next two weeks on average.

Harsh chemicals, aggressive skin care and scrubbing should be avoided on the treated area. The use of Arnica Healing Cream or Pure Emulsion can relieve some discomfort and discolorations. It is very important to remember not to scratch or rub the treated area, as this can prematurely pull the scabs off causing trauma which leads to slower healing times. Avoiding sun exposure to the area as it is healing is imperative for great results and to avoid any possibility of hyper/hypo pigmentation.

As with most procedures, there are certain risks and side effects. You may experience bruising, redness, swelling, and sensitivity in the area that was treated. There may be some temporary scabbing and redness. This is normal and part of the healing process! They are all temporary unless the normal healing is compromised by not heeding the above advice or that of our staff.

All of these skin imperfections can be removed by Thermo Coagulation at The Summit except for the following contraindications:

    • Pace maker or similar cardiac device
    • Taking blood thinners or anti-coagulants
    • History or present diagnosis of epilepsy
    • Pregnancy
    • Allergy to metals

Our staff performing Thermo Coagulation are trained and certified. They are also licensed Master Clinical Estheticians AND Electrologists. By making it necessary that our practitioners have training beyond what is required, we feel ensures the most effective and successful treatments.

Treatment with Thermo Coagulation requires a Complimentary 15 minute Consultation for assessment and pricing. A treatment session can take approximately 15 minutes to one hour depending on the number of skin imperfections to remove. A 15 minute session, to remove approximately 1-5 small imperfections, is $59.00.
